We sat down with David Cassini Bäckström, Founder of Casström Sweden and the chief knife designer, to ask him about the newest addition to the Casström range – the Casström Järv Series. This collection of knives is built for serious bushcraft and wilderness use, blending traditional Scandinavian design with practical performance for today’s outdoor enthusiasts.
What inspired you to make the Järv Series?
We wanted to create a knife that feels both tough and nimble – something that could stand up to heavy outdoor use but also shine in the finer skills of bushcraft. One of the most important disciplines in wilderness living is carving wood, and many outdoor enthusiasts find themselves reaching for a knife that’s thinner, faster, and more practical for that kind of
precision work.
The Järv Series was born from that idea: a knife that balances toughness with agility, so you can carve tent pegs, shape tools, or feather sticks just as easily as you can split kindling or prepare food in camp.

Why the No.10, Woodsman, and Lars Fält knives in particular?
We chose these models because they are proven designs – knives that have already stood the test of time in the wilderness. Whether it’s the classic No.10 SFK, the versatile Woodsman, or the legendary Lars Fält knife, each one has a strong reputation among bushcrafters and outdoor enthusiasts worldwide.
By adapting these trusted models into the Järv line, we wanted to give people knives they already know will perform well in real-world conditions, but now with a new steel and design
twist.
And a first for Casström – dark handles. What was the idea behind that?
Dark stained handles are more than just a visual choice – they’re a nod to tradition. In northern Sweden, where we are based, there’s a long history of treating wood with pine tar to protect it against the elements. It not only preserved the wood but gave knives and tools a distinctive look.
With the Järv Series, we wanted to honour that heritage. We treat our handles with a mix of pine tar and boiled linseed oil, which provides protection while also giving the knives an authentic northern Swedish feel. It’s a small detail, but one that ties the Järv to the past, even as it’s designed for modern bushcraft.
Why did you choose 15N20 steel for the Järv Series?
The choice of steel is always crucial in knife design, and for the Järv we went with 15N20, a high-carbon tool steel known for its toughness. It’s an excellent performer in the outdoors: very resistant to chipping when you’re splitting wood, strong enough for hard use, and yet still easy to sharpen.
That last part is important. A knife is only as good as its edge, and with 15N20 you don’t need advanced sharpening systems or complicated techniques. Even in the wilderness, with a simple stone, you can put a razor-sharp, hair-popping edge back on the blade. It’s steel that works with you, not against you – perfect for both seasoned outdoorsmen and those still learning the art of sharpening.
At approximately 3.2mm, the blade is lighter and nimbler than a 4mm, making it easier to control for fine bushcraft tasks without sacrificing strength. The steels toughness makes this possible. We have been asked for a thinner blade by Casström fans for a while, and we’re happy to report that we have listened!
What makes the Järv different from other Casström knives?
With the Järv Series, we’ve gone back to basics. While many companies are chasing the latest “super steels” with complex alloys, we decided to focus on what really matters in the field: a no-nonsense, high-performing carbon tool steel that delivers.
The Järv knives are simple, honest tools – designed to be reliable in the wilderness without overcomplicating things. Whether you’re practicing bushcraft, trekking through the forest, or camping off the beaten path, these knives will simply get the job done.
Final Thoughts
