Sustainable Sourcing in Knife Manufacturing: The Casström Approach
At Casström, we believe that high-quality knives should not come at the cost of the environment or ethical standards. As a Swedish knife manufacturer, our passion for craftsmanship goes together with our responsibility to the planet and the people who make our work possible. That’s why sustainability is at the heart of everything we do — from the materials we source to the energy that powers our offices, warehouse, and workshop.
The Sustainable Edge
Our logo carries the phrase “The Sustainable Edge.” This reflects both the literal edge of a knife and our commitment to sustainability in every aspect of production. To us, it’s more than just a slogan — it’s a philosophy. We design knives to last a lifetime, reducing the need for frequent replacements and minimizing environmental waste. A well-made tool is inherently sustainable because it remains useful for decades, rather than ending up in landfill after a short period of use. “The Sustainable Edge” encapsulates our promise: performance, durability, and responsibility.

Swedish Recycled Steel
Steel is the backbone of every knife, and choosing the right kind is critical. We use Swedish recycled steel, premium materials known for performance and durability. By relying on recycled steel, we reduce the need for mining raw iron ore, cutting down on environmental impact while maintaining the quality standards our customers expect.
Wood from Sustainable Forestry
The handles of our knives are crafted from responsibly sourced wood. We only select timber that comes from sustainable forestry operations, ensuring that forests are managed in a way that protects biodiversity, respects local communities, and guarantees regeneration for future generations.

Leather from Ethical EU Sources
For our sheaths and accessories, we use leather that originates in the EU as a by-product of the meat and dairy industries. This means no animals are raised solely for their hides, and the by-products of farming are fully utilised rather than wasted. Our leather is processed under strict EU regulations, ensuring ethical and sustainable practices throughout the supply chain.
Vegetable-Tanned Leather
In addition, we use vegetable-tanning processes for our leather. Unlike chrome tanning, which relies on harmful chemicals, vegetable tanning uses natural plant-based tannins, making it safer for both the environment and the skilled workers handling the hides. Our leather is tanned at one of the oldest tanneries in Europe, a facility that combines centuries of tradition with sustainable, responsible practices. The result is high-quality leather that is both beautiful and environmentally sound.

Renewable and Responsible Energy
Our premises are heated using geothermal energy, a renewable resource that reduces reliance on fossil fuels. The electricity we use comes from carbon-neutral sources, mainly hydro-electric, further minimizing our carbon footprint. Sustainability doesn’t stop at our products — it’s built into how we run our workshop every day.
Packaging with Purpose
Plastic waste is a global issue, and we’re committed to reducing our role in it. We minimize the use of plastic packaging, opting instead for recycled cardboard boxes and paper-based packing materials wherever possible. Every detail matters when it comes to lowering our environmental impact.

Recycling and Waste Reduction
From our offices to the workshop floor, we take recycling seriously. Waste materials are carefully separated and recycled, ensuring nothing that can be repurposed ends up in landfill. This mindset of responsibility helps us maintain a cleaner, more sustainable production process.
Manufacturing in the EU with Ethical Labour
Our manufacturing is done within the EU, ensuring that ethical labour standards are upheld. This commitment means fair compensation, safe working environments, and a production process that aligns with our values of integrity and respect.
We are committed to the SME Climate Hub
The SME Climate Hub is a non-profit global initiative that empowers small to medium sized companies to take climate action and build resilient businesses for the future.
We have joined thousands of other businesses across the globe in committing to reduce our emissions through the SME Climate Hub and will be counted in the United Nation’s Race to Zero campaign.

Always Striving for Better
Sustainability is not a destination — it’s a journey. We are constantly evaluating our processes, exploring new materials, and improving our methods to further reduce our environmental footprint. For us, every improvement, no matter how small, is a step toward a more sustainable future.
