Some info on curly birch: Latin name is Betula pendula var. carelica , and it is a variant of the plant species birch with a genetic defect that makes the tree develop burls on the trunk. The annual rings orients itself incorrectly, giving the wood a mottled and curly appearance. The variant is originally from Karelia in Finland which is why it is sometimes referred to as Karelian birch. The genetic defect creating the interesting pattern is being passed down to nearly 70 % of all trees in the next generation. Common silver birch is also often called curly birch , but you should only use the name of trees that has the gentic traits. However, even if a tree has the masur genetics it is rare to see burled wood in the whole tree and the intensity of the pattern can vary significantly in a log. Interestingly, some Finnish research has led to the possibility of cloning the finest trees and plants that develop very fine patterning can be planted in both Finland and Sweden.
